Case Studies - Paper & Print Glatfelter Paper Mill

Glatfelter’s Sustainable LED Lighting Solution

Glatfelter is a global brand in paper; it is committed to growing the business responsibly both with its moto ‘Beyond Paper’ and through its sustainability practices.

The company’s Lydney Paper Mill in Gloucestershire is the leading manufacturer of beverage papers in the world. It is, however, an extreme industrial operating environment and by the nature of the work, many of the Glatfelter staff work in a situation where there is no natural daylight. Lighting is therefore a critical element in everything from productivity to health and safety.

Following extensive trials of a number of leading LED manufacturers, the management at Glatfelter selected Dialight LED High Bays to light up their machine halls.

The Dialight solution replaced the aging 400W SON High Bay fittings. With the new Dialight LED fittings, the staff have seen the most noticeable improvement in working conditions and quality of light.

Maintenance and Heat Issues

Apart from the poor light quality of the existing fittings, access to replace light bulbs and carry out routine maintenance was restricted to the bi-annual factory shut-downs.

Many of the fittings are located in positions above the main paper machines and virtually inaccessible without specialist lift equipment. By replacing the traditional lights with Dialight LEDs, Glatfelter’s electricians can now concentrate on more important activities rather than changing light bulbs.

Apart from the obvious advantages of the Dialight LED products in terms of life of product, IP rating and durability, the operating temperature range was a key factor in the selection process.

With summer operating temperatures at ceiling height reaching 50°C, Dialight’s temperature compensation technology protects the luminaires from heat damage and maintains the lifespan of the fittings.

Reduced Energy Costs

The success of the project has allowed Glatfelter to reduce electricity consumption in the machine halls by 168,521KWh, resulting in a saving of over £11,000 a year in lighting costs alone. Additionally, with the factory operating around the clock throughout the year, the lack of maintenance required for LEDs has greatly increased the efficiency of the site.

Dialight LED High Bays deployed in the most hostile of industrial environments, help to reduce energy costs and improve the working environment for this global leader in speciality papers.
