LED Lighting solution dramatically improves light quality at NEC recycling centre

The recent upgrade to Dialight LED High Bay lighting at the National Exhibition Centre’s Waste Pre-Treatment Centre (WPTC), has seen a dramatic improvement in the light quality and has offered significant energy and carbon savings to the NEC Group.

The NEC is the UK’s premier exhibition centre, occupying a 610 acre site in Birmingham. Over 2.1m visitors are welcomed each year to around 140 trade and consumer events. The largest exhibitions include annual event like Crufts and BBC Gardener’s World.

The NEC operates a sizable WPTC to process the large amount of rubbish generated from the exhibitions. This includes the waste from the set-up and breakdown of the stands, through to the rubbish generated by the general public attending the events.

The NEC achieves its goal to become zero to landfill venue

The NEC is rightly proud of its green credentials, in particular the recycling and energy reduction targets. September 2012 saw the NEC become a zero to landfill venue, with the aim of recycling a minimum 50% of all waste on site, the exhibition industry’s only dedicated Waste Pre Treatment Centre is critical when it comes to delivering these ambitious targets.

The existing lighting in the WPTC created a number of issues for the users, specifically the light was gloomy and the transition between daylight and the interior was enormous. The Health & Safety element was a significant driver coupled with the need to reduce operating costs and carbon footprint.

The LED solution from The LED Industrial Lighting Co* secures improved light quality and a long term sustainable lighting technology to replace obsolete fixtures. It included the deployment of Dialight 14,000 lumen High Bay, equipped with the dome lens to ensure safe and uniform light quality across the facility.
